Regarding this specific film: It is MUCH less violent than it's 2010 predecessor so whereas I'd recommend waiting till 11-12 for the 1st installment, this could be watched and enjoyed by a mature nine year old that's already watched say Harry Potter 1-2. First and foremost, it is your task to GUARD your child's wonder and innocence until he/she is old enough and grows out of it naturally! Some funny is good, some funny is completely inappropriate, etc. Some sad is good, some sad is 'too soon' for kids. The only question that matters is this: "Is this movie going to enhance the life of my child?" Whether funny or sad, serious or goofy, the answer varies.
